On 3 April 2020, the Swiss Federal Council decided on a number of measures to ensure the availability of medical supplies that are essential for preventing and combating disease due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). These and other amendments to the relevant legislation (COVID-19 Ordinance 2) enter into force at midnight.

As part of efforts to combat the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, Swissmedic – the Swiss Therapeutic Products Agency – is being empowered to grant exemptions for the import and authorisation of medicinal products and for non-CE-certified medical devices whenever the epidemiological situation demands it.
