The "European Patients' Academy on Therapeutic Innovation" (EUPATI) is a project funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) of the European Union (EU). The IMI is a public-private partnership between the EU Commission and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).
Started in February 2012 for a period of five years, the project aims to provide patients with scientifically reliable, objective and comprehensible information on medicines research, development and approval. It will increase patients' ability to be well-informed advocates and advisors, for example. in clinical trials, with regulatory authorities and in ethics committees.
Swissmedic has been an active member of the Regulatory Advisory Panel, which is responsible for ensuring that the information provided is balanced and independent, since the project's inception.
EUPATI also works at national level and has set itself the goal of building up twelve EUPATI platforms. Swissmedic is represented in the National Liaison Team (NLT) for Switzerland and is working to help establish a EUPATI platform for the country.
